Simtronics GD10P IR Point Gas Detector 100% LEL CH4 Current Source
Condition: New – Open Box
Simrad Simtronics GD10P Infrared Point Gas Detector (100% LEL CHâ‚„, 5-Second Response, Current Source)
The Simtronics (formerly Simrad Optronics / 3M / Teledyne) GD10P is the global benchmark for combustible gas detection across harsh marine, offshore drilling, and onshore petrochemical environments. Designed for rapid, fail-safe detection of flammable hydrocarbons, this unit is calibrated for Methane CH4 across 0–100% LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) with an optimized 5-second optical response configuration and standard 4–20 mA current source analog output with HART communication.
Unlike conventional pellistor/catalytic sensors that suffer from sensor poisoning or filament burnout, the GD10P utilizes a solid-state infrared silicon source (SimSourceâ„¢) with dual-wavelength, dual-path optical compensation. This design eliminates zero drift, requires no field recalibration, and withstands extreme vibration and humidity with independently heated optics and a dual-layer sinter-free weather protector.

Key Features
- Silicon Solid-State IR Source (SimSourceâ„¢): Solid-state opto-electronic emitter eliminates fragile incandescent filament lamps, providing unmatched long-term stability and a 15-year optical life profile.
- Zero Field Recalibration & True Optical Compensation: Dual-wavelength, dual-path layout constantly balances sample and reference absorption to prevent zero drift from ambient shifts, contamination, or temperature swings.
- Sinter-Free Dual-Layer Weather Protector: Hydrophobic-free, mesh-free mechanical design allows instantaneous gas exchange without diffusion delays or clogging hazards common to porous metal sinters.
- Independently Heated Mirror and Optical Windows: Continuous internal heating prevents condensation, fogging, and icing under Arctic or high-humidity tropical marine conditions.
- SIL 2 / SIL 3 Systematic Capability: Certified to IEC 61508 for SIL 2 safety instrumented systems (SIL 3 capable architecture), drastically reducing routine proof-test intervals.
Equipment Compatibility
- Fire & Gas Systems (FGS): Directly compatible with Kongsberg K-Safe, Honeywell Safety Manager, Rockwell ControlLogix / AADvance, Emerson DeltaV SIS, Yokogawa ProSafe-RS, and Schneider Triconex.
- Marine Bridge & ESD Systems: Kongsberg Maritime AutoChief / K-Chief 600, Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum, Simrad safety panels.
- Legacy System Retrofit: Bridge interface module available to drop into 3-wire catalytic/pellistor channels without running new multi-core field cables.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Simtronics GD10P require routine field calibration?
No. Because the GD10P uses a solid-state infrared optical source with dual-wavelength, dual-path measurement, optical degradation and aging are automatically compensated in real time. Routine zero and span calibrations are eliminated, saving maintenance downtime on marine and offshore assets.
What is the difference between current source and current sink on the GD10P?
In a current source configuration, the GD10P actively drives the 4-20 mAÂ loop current using its internal 24 VDC supply directly into a ground-referenced PLC analog input card. In a sink configuration, an external power supply drives the current loop through the detector.
Can the GD10P detect hydrogen (H2) or toxic gases?
No. Infrared point detectors detect hydrocarbon gases that absorb light in the specific infrared spectrum (such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, and ethylene). Homonuclear diatomic gases like Hydrogen H2 do not absorb infrared radiation and require electrochemical or catalytic sensors.
How does the GD10P handle dirty optics or severe salt spray?
The unit features an optical self-monitoring system. When salt spray, soot, or dust coats the sapphire window, the detector outputs a maintenance warning current (2.0 mA) before tripping a false gas alarm or system fault, alerting crew to clean the optics during routine rounds.
