Apollo Orbis Marine Optical Smoke Detector | ORB-OP-42001-MAR
If you’ve spent any time chasing “Ghost Alarms” in the accommodation blocks at 0300, you know why picking the right head matters. The Apollo Orbis Marine (ORB-OP-42001-MAR) isn’t a “sleek” interior accessory; it’s a tool designed to survive engine room vibration and the constant salt-air cycling that kills cheaper, land-based sensors.
Standard detectors freak out the moment the HVAC kicks over or humidity hits 90%. The Orbis Marine uses a recalibrated sensing chamber to ignore those transient spikes while still catching a slow-burning smolder. We’ve found these hold up significantly better in high-traffic corridors and bridge consoles where dust and voltage fluctuations are the norm.

Key Maritime Applications
- Bridge & Control Rooms: Essential for electronics racks. These heads play nice with most Class-approved fire panels.
- Accommodation & Cabins: These are the standard for hallways. They handle the “vibration hum” of a ship better than the older Series 65s.
- Galleys & Laundries: You can use them here, but watch your placement. If you mount one directly above a commercial dryer or steam kettle, you’re going to get a call about a false alarm within a week. Offset them.
- Dry Stores: Good for general coverage where you don’t have heavy exhaust fumes.
Notes from the Bench
Don’t skip the base: To keep your type approval and IP rating, you must seat these in the ORB-MB-00001-MAR (Marine Base). I’ve seen guys try to save a few bucks using land-spec bases, but the contact pins eventually succumb to fretting corrosion in the salt air.
Testing & Maintenance: When doing your monthly rounds, use a Solo 330 aerosol dispenser. Do not—under any circumstances—blow tobacco smoke or use a heat gun on these to “speed things up.” You’ll coat the optical chamber in residue and end up replacing the head in six months.
Pro Tip on Installation: When wiring the base, don’t over-torque the terminal screws. If you warp the plastic base, the detector won’t seat correctly on the pins. You’ll get intermittent “Open Circuit” faults on the panel that are a nightmare to track down. Finger tight plus a quarter turn is plenty.
