Roper 2AM16 Petroleum Transfer Gear Pump
The Roper 2AM16 is a positive displacement rotary helical gear pump engineered for low-shear, pulseless transfer of hydrocarbons, lube oils, hydraulic fluids, and viscous distillates. Built within Roper’s time-tested A Series, the 2AM16 features precision-machined helical gears, an integral internal pressure relief valve, and self-lubricating sleeve bearings.
Operating at speeds up to 1800 RPM, the pump delivers nominal discharge rates up to 30.6 GPM (115.8 LPM) at continuous operating pressures up to 150 PSI (10.3 bar). With only two moving parts, it delivers smooth operation, low fluid shear, and high volumetric efficiency across thin fuels (such as MGO/diesel) to heavy lubricating oils and gear lubricants.
Model Details:
- Model: A Series 2AM16
- Manufacturer Part Number (MPN): 2AM16
- Configuration: Foot/Pedestal Mounted, High-Drive Shaft, with Built-in Internal Relief Valve
Features
- Precision Helical Pumping Gears: Helical tooth profiles ensure continuous rolling contact, dampening pressure pulsations, eliminating hydraulic trapping, and ensuring whisper-quiet operation compared to spur gear pumps.
- Integral Pressure Relief Valve: Factory-integrated, field-adjustable bypass valve prevents casing overpressurization and protects downstream valves and prime movers from deadhead pressure spikes.
- Elastomeric Mechanical Face Seal: Factory fitted with a self-adjusting Buna-N mechanical seal for drip-free shaft sealing on clean hydrocarbon lines up to 212°F (100°C).
- Process-Lubricated Sleeve Bushings: Heavy-duty bronze internal sleeve bearings rely entirely on the hydrodynamic film of the pumped medium, eliminating external lubrication points and packing maintenance.
- Bi-Rotational Fluid Routing: Designed for clockwise (CW) rotation as standard, but field-convertible to counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation simply by rotating the housing or adjusting relief valve orientation.

Compatibility & Prime Mover Interfaces
- Direct-Coupled Electric Motors: Standard NEMA 56C, 143T, 145T, 182T, and 184T frames or IEC 80/90/100 frames via flexible jaw couplings (Lovejoy, Rexnord) and rigid baseplates.
- Hydraulic Drives: Direct SAE A or B hydraulic drive splines when installed with bellhousings and flex couplers.
- PTO / Engine Drives: High-drive shaft accepts pulley/sheave arrangements within allowable radial overhung load specifications (an external outboard bearing support is recommended for heavy V-belt tension).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Roper 2AM16 pump operate dry during startup?
No. While it has self-priming capability when wetted, the internal bronze sleeve bearings rely entirely on a hydrodynamic film supplied by the pumped liquid. Running dry for more than 30–60 seconds will cause localized frictional heating, galling of the shaft journals, and premature failure of the mechanical seal faces.
How do I reverse the flow direction on the 2AM16?
The 2AM16 is bi-rotational. However, because it includes an integral pressure relief valve, flow reversal requires either repositioning the internal valve assembly or rotating the front faceplate 180° in accordance with the manufacturer’s manual. The relief valve must always be oriented to communicate with the discharge pressure port.
What are the standard shaft dimensions on the 2AM16?
The standard drive shaft is 0.750″ (3/4″) diameter with a standard square keyway, extending from the high-drive position to facilitate mounting to inline coupling hubs or belt drives.
Can this pump handle aggressive chemicals or seawater?
No. The standard 2AM16 features cast iron casing, carbon steel shafts, and bronze bearings, which are intended strictly for lubricating oils, fuels, and non-corrosive petroleum liquids. Pumping sea water, brine, or acidic compounds will rapidly pit the casing and destroy internal clearances. Stainless steel or specialty alloy pumps should be specified for corrosive chemicals.
What should I check if flow drops off significantly during operation?
First check the suction strainer for particulate or paraffin waxing. Next, verify that the internal relief valve spring has not loosened, lost tension, or become stuck open by particulate matter. If the relief valve is seated correctly, measure internal gear side-clearances; continuous abrasion from un-filtered oil can enlarge gear-to-case tolerances, causing internal fluid slip.
