Description

Dräger Polytron 5100 EC d S Explosion-Proof Gas Detector (MPN: 8344862)

The Dräger Polytron® 5100 EC d S (Part Number: 8344862, System Code: ETR 0300) is an industrial-grade, explosion-proof fixed gas detection transmitter engineered for continuous monitoring of toxic gases and oxygen O2 in hazardous industrial and marine environments. Operating on a micro-processor architecture paired with pre-calibrated DrägerSensor® EC electrochemical cells, this instrument converts target gas concentrations into a standardized, analog 4 to 20 mA active or passive current loop, supplemented by digital HART® 7 communication.

Constructed from heavy-duty, marine-grade epoxy powder-coated copper-free aluminum, the “d S” variant features a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) with an integrated stainless steel sensor housing. This design is rated for Zone 1, Zone 21, and Class I, Division 1 hazardous locations. It is suited for offshore oil & gas rigs, commercial marine engine rooms, LNG/LPG cargo areas, refinery processing units, and industrial chemical storage plants requiring uninterrupted gas monitoring under severe mechanical and climatic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between the Polytron 5100 and the Polytron 8100?

The Polytron 5100 is Dräger’s microprocessor-controlled 4–20 mA + HART transmitter designed for reliable industrial monitoring. The Polytron 8100 uses the same sensor platform but adds SIL 2 functional safety certification, advanced data logging capabilities, remote sensor cable extensions up to 30 meters, and optional relays directly integrated on the motherboard.

How do you perform zero-point and span calibration on the Polytron 5100 in an active Ex zone?

Calibration is non-intrusive. Using the included magnetic wand, touch the three front display targets (Up, Down, Enter) through the flameproof viewing window. The internal menu allows you to trigger zero calibration with clean air (or zero gas) and span calibration using certified target span gas applied via the calibration adapter. You do not need to declassify the zone or open the housing.

Can the Polytron 5100 EC d S operate in 2-wire loop-powered installations?

Yes. The unit supports standard 2-wire loop-powered 4–20 mA connections for most electrochemical sensors, simplifying retrofits into legacy wiring infrastructures. If internal relays or advanced fieldbus modules are required, a 3-wire power configuration is standard.
