The WARTSILA W46 crankshaft is an important part of the reliable Wärtsilä 46 series medium-speed diesel engines, which are made for maritime propulsion and power generation. Made from one piece of high-quality, pure steel and thoroughly machined, it can manage high combustion pressures of up to 200 bar while keeping bearing loads low. Its strong design makes it suitable for use in cruise ships, ferries, and power plants, where it will last a long period and have little downtime.

This crankshaft suits W46 models like the 6L46, 8L46, 12V46 and 16V46. It has cylinder bores of 460 mm and strokes of 580 mm, and it works best when the output is between 975 and 1050 kW per cylinder at 500 to 514 rpm.

WARTSILA W46 Crankshaft Models Available:

• 16V46: V-configuration 16 cylinders, power 15,600 kW at 500 rpm (standard) or 16,800 kW (C variant), used in Ro-Ro vessels like Seagard; crankshaft supports high combustion pressures >200 bar.

• 12V46: V-configuration 12 cylinders, power 11,700 kW at 514 rpm or 14,400 kW at 600 rpm; common in cruise ships (e.g., Voyager of the Seas), crankshaft length ~9m, weight ~15 tonnes.​

• 9L46: Inline 9 cylinders (left rotation), power ~8,775 kW at 500 rpm, HFO-capable; crankshaft std for power plants and propulsion, often with 51,000+ hrs service.

• 9R46: Inline 9 cylinders (right rotation), similar specs to 9L46 at ~8,775 kW; reversible design variant for flexible installations.

• 8L46: Inline 8 cylinders (left rotation), power 7,800 kW at 500 rpm; crankshaft available for spares, used in gen-sets and smaller vessels.

• 8R46: Inline 8 cylinders (right rotation), matching 8L46 output of 7,800 kW; optimized for counter-clockwise rotation needs.
