Description

Beckhoff LC5100 CANopen Bus Coupler | Marine & Industrial I/O

The Beckhoff LC5100 is a small, high-efficiency bus coupler that connects Beckhoff’s modular K-bus I/O terminals to the CANopen network. As a Low Cost (LC) version, it offers a simple, affordable way to automate maritime and industrial processes without sacrificing the tough dependability that Beckhoff is recognized for.

The LC5100 is a workhorse for distributed I/O systems from a marine engineering point of view. This coupler can handle up to 64 extension terminals and directly and clearly maps them to the CANopen object dictionary. It may be used for everything from managing auxiliary engine monitoring to basic valve control manifolds. Its slim shape is perfect for bridge consoles or engine room control cabinets that are already full and don’t have much place for rails.

Where to Use?

  • Marine Auxiliary Systems: Keeping an eye on fuel levels, bilge alarms, and the order in which pumps work.
  • Distributed I/O: Using CAN-bus to connect sensors in engine rooms that are far away to a central PLC.
  • HVAC Control: Keeping an eye on the air conditioning and ventilation systems in the ship’s living quarters.
  • Machinery Automation: Great for small packing, conveyor, or sorting equipment that needs to link to CANopen.

Pro-Tips:

1) Terminating Resistors: Never forget the 120-ohm resistor at the end of your CAN physical line. In a marine environment, electromagnetic interference (EMI) from large motors can wreak havoc on signal integrity; a proper termination is your first line of defense.

2) Current Budgeting: The LC5100 provides up to 500 mA to the K-bus. If you are stacking power-hungry analog or specialty terminals, calculate your total current draw. If it exceeds 500 mA, you must insert a Beckhoff KL9110 or KL9210 power feed terminal to prevent brownouts.

3) Shielding & Grounding: Always ground the DIN rail properly. In saline environments, ensure your shield drain wire is landed correctly to prevent ghost bus errors that are notoriously hard to track down during sea trials.
