Description

Fireye 45UV5 UV-Eye Ultraviolet Self-Checking Scanner Mod. 1009

The Fireye 45UV5 Model 1009 is an ultraviolet (UV) flame scanner engineered for continuous, non-recycling industrial and marine burner service. Standard non-checking photocells can fail in an energized “runaway” state due to continuous high UV intensity, ionizing background gas, or internal electrode degradation, generating an erroneous flame signal. The 45UV5 Model 1009 addresses this risk through an integrated electromechanical shutter assembly.

The Mod 1009 integrates internal line-voltage shutter drive circuitry. It cycles the mechanical shutter closed for approximately 0.4 seconds every 4.0 seconds. During this window, the optical path to the quartz viewing lens is blocked; the host flame safeguard control validates that the tube drops out instantly. If the tube continues emitting ionizing discharge pulses while blocked, the system trips immediately on safety lockout (False Flame / Scanner Failure), keeping marine auxiliary boilers, inert gas generators (IGGs), and power utility burners safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes the Fireye 45UV5-1009 from the 45UV5-1005?

The 45UV5-1009 has built-in 120VAC line-voltage shutter drive electronics connected via its two black leads (L1/L2). The 45UV5-1005 does not include internal shutter drive circuitry; it requires an external 16–24 VDC pulsing signal directly from specific rack-mounted controllers.

Can the Fireye 45UV5 Mod 1009 detect both pilot gas and heavy oil flames?

Yes. The 190 nm to 270 nm spectral tube detects high-energy UV radiation from both pilot gases (propane, natural gas) and fuel oil flames (MDO, MGO, HFO, VLSFO).

Why does my burner lock out with a “False Flame Purge” fault?

This fault typically indicates a defective UV phototube that continues emitting electron pulses while the internal shutter is closed, or a shutter stuck mechanically open by carbon buildup or a failed drive coil. When the amplifier detects a signal during the 0.4-second check window, it triggers a safety lockout to prevent a burner start on an unverified sensor.

How do I adjust sensitivity on the 45UV5-1009 scanner?

Sensitivity can be adjusted mechanically using the slotted orifice plate behind the front lens. On earlier engineering revisions, tube angle orientation relative to the lens axis alters the field of view. If signal saturation persists, field orifice restrictor discs can be inserted into the 1″ pipe union.

What is the service life of the 4-320-1 UV detector tube?

In standard continuous service with adequate purge air and temperatures below 93°C (200°F), the 4-320-1 tube typically provides 10,000 to 20,000 operating hours. We recommend replacing the tube during scheduled biennial drydock overhauls or whenever dynamic signal voltage falls below 2.0 VDC on your Fireye display test jack.
