Crowcon Flamgard Plus Exd Flammable Gas Detector 96HD
The Crowcon Flamgard Plus Exd Flammable Gas Detector 96HD is a heavy-duty, flameproof fixed gas detection instrument engineered to continuously monitor ambient air for explosive levels of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and other combustible gases. Built to survive severe offshore, marine, and heavy industrial environments, it features a poison-resistant catalytic bead (pellistor) sensor within a flameproof housing. The integration of a local 3-digit LCD window allows for non-intrusive, single-operator calibration using an external magnetic wand—completely eliminating the need to obtain hot work permits or breach the explosion-proof integrity of the junction box during standard maintenance.

Features
- Non-Intrusive Calibration: Zero and span adjustments can be made externally via the window with the operation of the magnetic wand, eliminating the need to access the junction box and saving important time in classified zones.
- Flameproof (Ex d) Enclosure: Built with strong explosion-isolation pathways able to withstand internal combustion and prevent transfer of ignition to surrounding ambient air.
- Flexible 3-Wire Signal: Configurable field wiring provides 4-20mA current sink or current source outputs for maximum interoperability with modern or legacy control loop systems.
- Arduous-Duty Metallurgy Rugged 316 stainless steel sensor head enclosure and marine grade, low-copper alloy junction box.
Applications
- Marine and offshore: FPSOs, drilling rigs, tankers, offshore platforms and refinery pump rooms.
- Chemical Process factories Hydrocarbon storage tanks, chemical synthesis factories and distribution terminals
- Power Generation: Gas turbine enclosures, hydrogen storage batteries and fuel manifold bays.
- Wastewater Processing : Methane collection tunnels, digester headspaces, cogeneration facilities.
- Aviation & Automotive: Hangar fuel storage areas, paint booths, engine test cells and refueling stations.
Compatible Control Panels
- Crowcon Systems: Vortex, Gasmaster, Gasmonitor+, Gasward controllers.
- Third-Party Integrations: Fully interoperable with any standard PLC, SCADA network, or distributed control system (DCS) supporting isolated 3-wire 4-20mA current analog signals.
Marine Engineer Expert’s Guide & Pro Tips
Target Gas Density and Sensor Placement
As marine engineers, we often deal with multiple gas risks simultaneously. Remember that placement depends entirely on the vapor density of the target gas relative to air.
- For Methane (LNG) installations: Hydrogen and methane are lighter than air. Mount the Flamgard Plus at a high level and always use a Collector Cone (Part No. C01051) to direct escaping gases onto the sinter.
- For Propane, Butane, or Petrol Vapors (LPG): Heavy hydrocarbon gases accumulate in lower levels, bilges, and coffer dams. Mount the detector low down (approximately 20 cm above the deck plates), ensuring it is protected against washing down and mechanical impact.
