- The Dynamic Fit Requirement Positive-pressure demand masks must be fit tested (quantitative or qualitative) on a frequent basis to ensure proper safety in IDLH zones (Noonan, 2006). Never mix facepieces from different manufacturers with Draeger demand valves, because a slight difference in dimensions might result in a facepiece seal failure, with potentially disastrous results, such as gas bypass or leakage.
- Pneumatic O-Ring Maintenance: Visually check the high-pressure EPDM O-ring each time you dismount or remount cylinders on the backplate hand-wheel connector. High ambient salinity in maritime situations can accelerate salt crystallisation inside the threads, shredding seal components and generating a gradual high-pressure leak. Keep a supply of specialised silicone grease on available for these seals.
- Residual pressure management Always isolate the cylinder valve entirely and vent residual line pressure through the bypass button on the lung demand valve, after testing or use and before attempting to unthread the cylinder connection. If you attempt to attach an unthreaded cylinder with a line pressure of 300 bar, the internal reducer threads could be damaged instantaneously.
