The ESD5500E Speed Control Unit is a high-end, all-electronic governor designed to control engine speed with very fast and precise reactions to transient load changes. This closed loop control system is manufactured by Governors America Corp. (GAC) and utilizes a magnetic pickup sensor signal to sense engine speed and a proportional electric actuator to maintain a very steady controlled speed.

The ESD5500E is engineered for ultimate reliability in demanding commercial, industrial, and maritime situations. The multi-vibe internal circuitry allows for isochronous (zero-droop) operation and adjustable droop operation. Built-in smoke-limiting features like customizable STARTING FUEL and SPEED RAMPING greatly decrease exhaust emissions during cold cranks, preserving your engine from early carbon build-up and meeting stringent environmental standards.

Pro Tips for Installation:

  1. Shielding Is Non-Negotiable: The magnetic speed sensor lines (Terminals C and D) must be twisted and shielded for their entire run. Terminate the shield only at the governor end to prevent stray ground loops from throwing off your frequency signal
  2. Anti-Instability Tuning Sequence: When adjusting the GAIN and STABILITY pots, turn the GAIN clockwise until the engine begins a rapid, audible hunt. Back it off counterclockwise until it settles, then go one full division further CCW. Repeat the exact same sequence for STABILITY. Tuning outside this sequence often leads to low-frequency hunting under partial load.
  3. Physical Mounting Orientation: To maximize the lifespan of the electronics in damp engine rooms, always mount the ESD5500E vertically. This allows any airborne condensation, salt mist, or ambient moisture to drain naturally off the casing rather than pooling on the terminal strip.
