SEL-2505 2505464Xx Remote I/O Module | Fiber Optic Digital I/O
The Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) 2505 Remote I/O Module is a ruggedized, high-speed solution designed to extend the reach of digital I/O through fiber-optic communication. By converting copper-based signals to fiber, it eliminates the risks associated with ground potential rise (GPR) and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
The 2505464Xx variant specifically provides reliable, low-latency performance for critical protection and control applications, ensuring that distance doesn’t compromise speed or safety in harsh industrial environments.
Features:
- It features eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs.
- Communication is through a fiber-optic port, which employs optical fibers instead of several wires. This minimizes costs, increases safety by decreasing exposure to DC ground dangers, and boosts system reliability by mitigating ground potential rise.
- It offers secure pilot communications for protective relaying in two- and three-terminal line applications.
- Allows for trip and close-coil monitoring from a distance or up close.
- It works with SEL relays that enable Mirrored Bits communications to add more relay I/O without having to change the control panel.
- Designed for harsh conditions: It withstands vibration, electrical surges, quick transients, and severe temperatures. The printed circuit boards are conformal-coated to guard against airborne pollutants such as hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, salt, and moisture.
- The power supply options are 125/250V AC or DC at 50/60 Hz with a power usage about 5 W.
- The fiber port commonly uses 850 nm multimode fiber optics.
- It weighs about 1.44 kg.
- The module supports various data rates, including 9,600 to 38,400 bps, with operating durations from 10 to 18 ms depending on the speed.
- It uses the Mirrored Bits protocol to encode and decode I/O status, which makes communication more reliable and helps find mistakes.
- The module has a way to check the integrity of communication paths and will sound alerts if fiber-optic cables are broken or disrupted.
- The dimensions are 338.6 mm high, 165.1 mm wide, and 55.2 mm deep.
This device is used to cheaply add I/O contacts to protective relays or other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). It improves system protection and monitoring by using secure fiber-optic communications.
Tips from our engineer:
- Fiber Cleanliness Always clean ST connections with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol before insertion. Even a minuscule piece of dust can induce enough signal attenuation to set off Mirrored Bits alarms.
- Logic Coordination: When mapping your Mirrored Bits, ensure the local relay’s transmit (TX) is the same as the SEL-2505’s receive (RX). Commissioning troubleshooting can be frustrating when there is a mismatch.
- Surge Protection The fiber link offers isolation, but the power supply to the 2505 must be well fused and grounded to the chassis to protect the internal logic from local surges.
