In my experience on VLCCs and bulk carriers, the XE100NS is the ‘workhorse’ of the sub-panel. While many engineers focus only on the Amp rating, always pay attention to the $I_{cu}$ (Ultimate Breaking Capacity). At 25kA (415V), this unit is exceptionally robust for its size.

Tips:

  1. Connection Torque. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for the terminal bolts. Loose connections on a 100A breaker lead to localized heating, which is the #1 cause of nuisance tripping and eventual fire hazards in engine room panels.
  2. Environment. If installing in a high-salt environment, ensure the enclosure has adequate ventilation but use a thin coat of dielectric contact grease on the busbar connections to prevent galvanic corrosion.
