Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Burner Primary Swirler BTR-0102-008 HNG490
The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Burner Primary Swirler (Model: BTR-0102-008, Series: HNG490) is a precision-engineered, high-temperature combustion component designed specifically for industrial and marine auxiliary/main boilers. Acting as a core flame-stabilization element within the burner assembly, the primary swirler aerodynamically shapes the incoming primary combustion air vector.
By inducing a high-velocity rotational swirl, it establishes a low-pressure Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone (CTRZ). This localized aerodynamic profile draws hot combustion gases back toward the fuel spray root, ensuring sustained ignition stability, optimal fuel-air atomization mixing, and minimized unburned carbon (UBC) emissions under fluctuating load demands.

Compatibility
- MHI Boiler Series: MAC-B, MC-B, and auxiliary marine oil-fired boiler plants.
- Burner Systems: MHI HNG series low-NOx and standard fuel burner assemblies utilizing pressure-jet or steam-assisted atomizing nozzles.
- Cross-Reference Part Numbers: MHI-BTR0102008, HNG-490-SWIRLER, BTR-0102-008.
Features
- Advanced Aerodynamic Geometry: Optimized blade angle geometry ensures accurate primary air rotation, ensuring excellent mixing efficiency and reducing flame detachment tendencies.
- Thermal Fatigue Resistance Cast from high quality heat resistant alloy steel, designed to endure severe radiant back-heat from the furnace chamber without thermal cracking or warping.
- Anti-Coking Surface Finish: Decreased aerodynamic drag minimizes local fuel droplet stagnation on the vanes, substantially decreasing rates of carbon deposition (coking).
- Concentric Alignment Channels: Dedicated locating channels ensuring exact concentricity with the oil atomizer tip, preserving an even peripheral air gap.
- Direct Drop-In Integration: Designed to match the exact OEM footprint for field replacement with no modification to existing burner register or air sleeve assembly.
Applications
- Main propulsion boiler steam plants onboard large commercial cargo vessels, tankers, and bulk carriers.
- Auxiliary oil-fired boilers used for fuel oil pre-heating, domestic shipboard heating, and cargo tank washing systems.
- Industrial process steam plants utilizing MHI multi-fuel burners for manufacturing and power generation applications.
- Low-NOx retrofit projects requiring strict aerodynamic air-staging components.
Guide by Marine Engineer:
- Check Vane Clearance: Before locking the set screws, check that the radial clearance between the outer edge of the swirler blades and the inner diameter of the burner throat sleeve is uniform all around. Microzones of incomplete combustion are caused by unbalanced air bypass.
- Mitigate Vanadium Corrosion: Ensure the burner shut-down purge cycle is functioning correctly if running constantly on high-sulphur Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). The removal of residual fuel prevents unburned carbon from depositing on the swirler surface, which is a catalyst for high temperature ash corrosion at temperatures greater than 600 °C.
- Fastener Treatment: When installing, always apply a high temperature, nickel based anti-seize compound to the securing bolts or locating pins. Standard copper anti-seize compounds will galvanically break down in the extreme localized heat of the burner front plate.
