  1. Avoid Using Deformed Pins. Always check the existing dowel pins on an overhaul of a high end cylinder head or valve plate. A minor bend in a valve plate pin might cause the valve reed seating to be misaligned, allowing gas blow-by, lowering volumetric efficiency and causing the reed to fail prematurely.
  2. Verify Seat Position Use a brass drift or dead-blow mallet to drive the replacement pin into the crankcase shoulder or pump housing. Do not hit the face of the pin directly with a regular steel hammer. Mushrooming the top of the pin will not let the valve plate or bearing assembly slide smoothly into position. Only after the crankcase bore is clean of carbon varnish, drive the new pin home.
