Description

MMC UTI Tape Model D-2401-2 Tri-Mode Gauging System

The MMC UTI Tape Model D-2401-2 (Flexi-Dip Tri-Mode) is an intrinsically safe, portable liquid gauging device engineered for closed/restricted tank sounding on oil tankers, chemical carriers, offshore platforms, and shore-based terminal facilities. Designed for single-penetration tank operations, the D-2401-2 provides exact measurements of Ullage (liquid level), Oil/Water Interface boundary, and Cargo Temperature without venting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) freely to the atmosphere.

The system incorporates a piezoelectric sonic/ultrasonic sensor paired with an optical/conductivity array and a Class A Platinum RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector). When paired with MMC Vapor Control Valves (Micro-B, Mini Micro-B, or Standard “A”/”B” barrels), the D-2401-2 delivers complete custody transfer accuracy while meeting SOLAS, MARPOL, and OCIMF SIRE compliance standards.

Equipment Compatibility & Valve Interfaces

  • MMC Vapor Control Valves: Direct coupling to MMC Standard “A”, “B”, “S”, “U” valves, Micro-B (MB), and Mini Micro-B (MMB) deck valves (1.5″ to 4″ variants).
  • Third-Party Vapor Valves: Compatible via standard quick-connect adapters for Tanktech, Enraf Tanksystem (HERMetic), and Nakakita flanges.
  • Cargo Applicability: Crude oils, refined petroleum products (HFO, MGO, Gasoline), petrochemicals, lubricating oils, and slop tank multi-phase mixtures.

Key Features

  1. Single-Penetration Tri-Mode Operation: Obtains precise ullage, oil-water interface levels, and cargo temperature in one descent, reducing deck cycle time and tank vapor release.
  2. Distinct Dual-Tone Acoustic Discrimination: Emits a continuous solid tone upon contacting non-conductive hydrocarbon layers and shifts instantaneously to an intermittent pulsed chirp at the oil-water interface.
  3. Chemical-Resistant ETFE Encapsulation: Multi-conductor graduated steel tape is sealed in extruded ETFE/Teflon, preventing aromatic hydrocarbon swelling, acid corrosion, and mechanical delamination.
  4. True Restrictive Vapor Containment: Equipped with high-integrity fluorosilicone wiper blades and an integral barrel seal that cleans the tape upon retrieval while retaining tank vapors within statutory limits.

Industrial Applications

  • Marine Tanker Cargo Sounding: Manual custody transfer measurement and Ullage-Interface confirmation on Product, Crude Oil, and Chemical Tankers.
  • Slop & Bilge Separation Monitoring: Locating interface levels in slop tanks and settling tanks before decanting or oily-water separator (OWS) processing.
  • Shore Terminal & Refinery Storage: Hydrocarbon inventory verification, tank stratification monitoring, and water-bottom drainage level detection in floating-roof or cone-roof tanks.
  • Offshore FPSO / FSO Offloading: Primary manual backup calibration for radar or hydrostatic automatic tank gauging (ATG) arrays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the MMC D-2401-2 distinguish between oil and water?

The sensor probe utilizes an optical/conductive sensing gap. When immersed in an electrically non-conductive medium (such as hydrocarbons), it triggers a continuous audible tone. When the probe enters conductive water, the circuit closes across the detection electrodes, shifting the output to an intermittent pulsed beeping tone.

What battery types are approved for intrinsically safe use in hazardous zones?

To maintain Factory Mutual (FM) and ATEX intrinsic safety compliance, use exclusively approved 9V alkaline cells: Duracell MN1604 or Eveready #522. Never replace batteries within cargo areas or hazardous zones (Zone 0/1/2).

What is the difference between Restricted (“R”) and Closed/Gas-Tight (“F”/”C”) models?

The D-2401-2 “Restricted” model operates via a sealed vapor valve that permits negligible, controlled vapor displacement during tape movement. For total zero-emission gas containment (Gas-Tight closed gauging under IMO IBC/MARPOL Annex VI requirements), the MMC Model N-2401-2 fully enclosed version is required.

How often does the D-2401-2 require recalibration for SIRE tanker inspections?

OCIMF SIRE guidelines mandate that portable UTI meters undergo full functional verification and temperature sensor calibration every 12 months by an authorized marine service station. A valid calibration test certificate must be retained aboard the vessel for vetting inspections.
