Schneider EOCR FDM2-WRDUW Digital Motor Protection Relay
The Schneider EOCR FDM2-WRDUW isn’t just a standard trip-switch; it’s a ruggedized MCU-based guardian for three-phase AC motors. In the tight confines of a marine switchboard, this flush-mount unit serves as the critical line of defense against thermal overload and mechanical jamming. It’s built to talk directly to Schneider Acti9 breakers and integrates without friction into Honeywell Safety Manager or wider Bridge Alert Management (BAM) systems via its RS-485 Modbus port. For an ETO, this means no more guessing—you get real-time load telemetry and definitive fault logs delivered straight to your workstation.
Marine grids are notoriously dirty. Between heavy-lift crane surges and diesel-gen frequency swings, standard industrial relays often fail. The WRDUW series is different. We’ve seen these units maintain pinpoint accuracy even on 60Hz grids plagued by severe harmonic distortion. By separating the processing brain from the display interface, the FDM2 ensures that the delicate electronics stay protected deep inside the cabinet, while the operator interacts with a hardened, vibration-proof panel door module.

Maintenance & Pro-Engineer Field Tips
Combatting Terminal Creep and Vibration
One ghost in the machine we often find on older vessels is terminal creep. The constant 10Hz to 50Hz vibration from the main engine causes screw terminals to microscopically back out. In the EOCR FDM2, this can cause erratic phase loss alarms.
Pro Tip: Always use bootlace ferrules on your control wiring and check the torque (aim for 1.0 Nm) during every dry-docking cycle. A dab of thread-locking lacquer on the mounting screws won’t hurt either.
Solving the Salt-Mist Failure Path
While the front of the FDM2 is rated for panel mounting, the rear RJ45 cable connection is the Achilles’ heel. In high-humidity tropical routes, salty air can bridge the pins on the communication cable. Every quarter, unplug the display cable and check for green oxidation (verdigris). If you see it, clean it with contact cleaner and apply a dielectric grease. This simple two-minute check prevents the relay from locking up during a critical ballast operation.
