The Banner VE202G1A is a 2MP Smart Camera for exceptional performance in demanding automated inspection environments. The vision sensor is designed for dependability and has a 1600×1200 grayscale imager that can perform complex inspection algorithms internally without the need for a PC. As a marine engineer I am used to equipment with predictable latency and good MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) and the VE Series achieves this with rugged construction and an intuitive, localized interface that offers fast deployment in demanding industrial environments.

Key features:

• A 2 MP grayscale sensor with a resolution of 1600 × 1200 pixels lets you look closely at parts and labels. ​
• Tools for processing images, such as grayscale value, object, edge and location, pattern, blob, blemish, and bead detection, as well as tools for math and measurement analysis. ​
• Up to 999 inspection jobs can be kept in 500 MB of internal memory, which makes it easy to switch between different product recipes quickly. ​
• It has a built-in 2-line, 8-segment LCD with buttons for local status and basic configuration, as well as programmable LEDs for power, switching state, and error signaling. ​

Specifications for optics and imaging

• The imager is a 1/1.8″ CMOS in grayscale. ​
• 1600 × 1200 pixels, 4.5 µm pixel size, and 256 levels of gray. ​
• Frame rate: up to 50 frames per second, and the exposure time can be changed from about 0.02 ms to 500 ms to fit diverse illumination and motion rates. ​
• Lens mount: C-mount; C-mount lenses with a megapixel rating are needed and are sold separately. ​
• External lighting: a special connector for controlling an outside light source. ​

Electrical and I/O:

• The supply voltage is between 12 VDC and 30 VDC, with 24 VDC being the most common value. ​
• Current consumption: up to about 400 mA (not including load and outside lights). ​
• I/O: 6 optically isolated lines, usually set up as 5 programmable PNP/NPN digital inputs/outputs and 1 specialized trigger input. ​
• For reliable functioning in industrial panels, short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection are built in. ​

Communication links

• Ethernet: An 8-pin M12 D-coded port that supports Ethernet speeds of 10, 100, and 1000 Mbps. ​
• EtherNet/IP, Modbus/TCP, PROFINET, PCCC, FTP, and RS-232 serial are all supported protocols that make it easy to connect to PLCs, HMIs, and PCs. ​
• You can connect to a PC over Ethernet to set up, monitor, and manage jobs with Vision Manager software. ​

• Banner Ring Lights and Backlights (integrated lighting control).
• Standard M12 industrial cabling and patch cords.

Mechanical and environmental:

• The VE-series aluminum housing is rectangular and is around 88 × 67 × 41.4 mm (H × W × L). ​
• There are three types of connectors: an 8-pin M12 D-coded (Ethernet), a 12-pin M12 male (power and I/O), and a 3-pin M8 female (lighting). ​
• Standard protection grade is IP20, however it can go up to IP67 when used with the right lens cover in washdown settings. ​
• The operating temperature is between 0 °C and +50 °C, which is good for most indoor industrial uses. ​
• According to information from the distributor, the weight is about 0.57 kg. ​

Tips for Long-Term Reliability:

1. Thermal Management: The item is rugged, but requires proper airflow in your enclosure. In heated conditions, attach the camera to a heat conducting bracket (aluminum/steel) to act as a heat-sink.
2. Cable Strain Relief Vibration can be an issue in industrial operations. Do not use the M12 connector for structural support. Make sure wires have appropriate strain relief 3–5 inches from the connector to prevent pin fatigue.
3. Lighting Sync: The VE202G1A supports accurate lighting strobing. Make sure to coordinate your light pulse with the integration time of the camera. This greatly decreases motion blur and improves the signal-to-noise ratio in high-speed applications.
4. Optical Integrity: Before use, clean the lens and protective cover using optical-grade solvent only. Even tiny particles on the front element can trigger “false failures” in the pattern matching algorithms.
5. IP Rating: IP67 rating is only valid when the lens enclosure and back connections are securely secured. In washdown settings, do not run the camera without the protective lens cover.
