Marine Chief Engineer’s Field Diagnostics

When troubleshooting an engine generator set controlled by the EG-III, the module’s front panel is your primary diagnostic interface. Always pay close attention to the Pulse Pickup LED.

If the engine is cranking but fails to fire, check this LED first. If it is dark, your Governor Module is not receiving the minimum 1.0 VAC signal required from the magnetic speed sensor to initiate fuel injection.

If the speed sensor signal checks out but you still have no start command, check the Metering Module on the far left of the rack to ensure an engine shutdown alarm has not remained latched.

Installation Guide:

1. Shielding Speed Inputs: Ensure that the magnetic pickup shielded cables (typically wired to pins TB2-26 & 27) are grounded at only one end. Multi-point grounding creates ground loops that corrupt the speed pulse frequency (3660 Hz), causing governor hunting and unstable frequency outputs.
2. Manual Breaker Rules: Under no circumstances should the manual mechanical “PUSH ON” button located directly on the generator’s physical circuit breaker front panel be used to bypass the EG-III sync loop. Doing so can lead to out-of-phase bus connection failures, causing terminal structural and winding damage.
