Ingersoll Rand FA5A-24XK1 Air Winch | 5-Ton Third Generation

Description

The Ingersoll Rand FA5A-24XK1 Third Generation Air Winch provides best in class heavy duty air lifting and pulling power. Designed to perform in the harsh environments of naval decks, offshore oil rigs, mining shafts and other major industrial sites, this 5-ton unit of the “Force 5” series performs reliably when electric or hydraulic equipment can’t be used safely.

The FA5A-24XK1 is designed with an ultra-rugged cast steel exterior frame with a space-saving gearbox-in-drum design. It has a 25 HP radial piston pneumatic motor offering high torque and stepless variable speed control for precision load positioning. The “XK1” spec features an automated oil-bath disc brake, a standard utility setting for better stopping force, and mechanical redundancy for high-consequence loads.

Preventative Maintenance on the Oil-Bath Disc Brake

The XK1 brake housing contains an internal multi-disc brake submerged in oil. Marine atmospheres experience intense temperature swings, causing moisture condensation inside the sealed gearbox and brake housings.

Pro Tip: Check the oil levels weekly via the sight plugs. If the oil looks milky, emulsified, or discolored, water has bypassed the static seals. Drain it immediately and refill with fresh EP 80W-90 gear lubricant. Allowing saltwater to sit inside that disc cluster will cause the friction plates to rust, weld together, or fail to slip under high thermal loads during lowering operations.

Applications

  • Offshore drilling and production platforms: Safe handling of drill pipe strings, marine risers and big subsea equipment on open decks where electric motors are forbidden owing to explosive gases.
  • Marine Commercial Vessels and Shipyards: Used for mooring assistance, barge placement, heavy cargo loading, skidding operations, and shipyard fabrication pull-ins.
  • Moving heavy machines down steep inclines, hauling ore cars and tensioning conveyor belts are all done with pneumatic force in mining and underground tunnelling which produces no electrical sparks beneath.
  • Heavy infrastructure building involves erection of structural steel sections, installation of bridge caissons and dragging of high-tension utility lines across challenging terrain.

Pneumatic Fluid Management & Supply Integrity

As a marine engineer who has serviced these units in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico, I cannot overstate the importance of air quality. Pneumatic winches are notoriously hungry for air volume rather than just pressure. A dropsy in flow (CFM) under load will cause stalling, even if your pressure gauge reads 90 psi static.

Always install a dedicated Filter-Regulator-Lubricator (FRL) assembly as close to the air inlet as possible. Because the radial piston motor relies on dynamic air-sealing across its cylinder rings, operating it dry will destroy the sleeves within weeks. Ensure your line lubricator is filled with an approved ISO VG 32 or SAE 10W non-detergent pneumatic tool oil, calibrated to feed approximately 4 to 6 drops per minute during sustained operation.
